Jan Vindevogel’s work explores the threshold between presence and absence, between the visible and the unseen. It investigates how we relate to a reality that cannot be fully understood or controlled.
Drawing on the legacy of the Cartesian separation between mind and world, his work reflects on a condition of modern alienation. Vindevogel imagines the contemporary individual as an organic being travelling through reality within a spacecraft of rationality: a structure that offers orientation and understanding, yet simultaneously creates distance from the living and mysterious world beyond it.
The images are not illustrations of fixed ideas, but traces of encounters with something that reveals itself only partially. Fragments, apparitions and ambiguous forms point towards realities that exceed language and knowledge.
Rather than offering answers, the work inhabits the space of uncertainty. It invites viewers to dwell on the threshold itself—between control and surrender, familiarity and mystery—where the unknown begins to emerge.
